And every year around this time I get especially excited, because my birthday is coming up in April— which means birthday gift season at Sephora.
If you’re part of the Sephora Beauty Insider program, you get to pick one free birthday gift from a small list of curated product sets. Some years the options are just okay, but this year there are actually some really interesting choices.
Since I’ve recently started diving deeper into the science behind skincare and beauty products, I decided not to choose blindly this year. Instead, I wanted to take a closer look at what these products actually contain, what they’re designed to do, and who they might work best for.

My Pick
After researching all the options, I’ve decided to go with the Dr. Dennis Gross Skin Spa Trio.
Since I’ve recently become really interested in skincare science, this set gives me the chance to experiment with several different types of formulas:
• a barrier-supporting moisturizer
• a hyaluronic acid–focused plumping serum
• a chemical exfoliation treatment
Even though the samples are small, I’m curious to see how my skin reacts to the ingredients and technology in these formulas.
The Tower 28 set was a close second choice because the hypochlorous acid spray is interesting from a skin biology perspective.
