How I Maintain a Two Bedroom Basement Suite (Realistic Cleaning Routine)

When I look to influencers to figure out how often I should be cleaning, it honestly feels excessive and unrealistic.

Perfect homes, daily deep cleans, spotless everything — it looks nice, but it’s not always realistic for everyday life.

My cleaning routine used to look like this:

I’d notice something small — like the bathroom sink needing to be cleaned.
Then I’d tell myself I should just deep clean the entire bathroom.
Then I’d get overwhelmed because I knew that would take a while.
So… I’d do nothing.

The sink wouldn’t get cleaned, and I’d procrastinate until I had a random burst of motivation.

To get out of that cycle (and clear the mental load), I decided to create a simple, realistic cleaning schedule — something I can actually stick to.

My Realistic Cleaning Schedule

Instead of trying to do everything at once, I break things down by how often they actually need to be done.

Instead of focusing on rooms or areas, I break things down into easy, manageable tasks, so everything stays clean instead of one room at a time.

Daily

These are quick tasks that keep the house feeling fresh and livable throughout the week.

Twice a Week

Weekly

This is where most of the “maintenance cleaning” happens:

Every 2 Weeks

Monthly

These are deeper cleaning tasks that don’t need to be done often:

Every 3 Months

Every 6 Months

Yearly

Why This Works

The biggest shift for me was realizing:

👉 Not everything needs to be done all the time

Breaking tasks into smaller timeframes:

• reduces overwhelm
• keeps things consistently clean
• removes the “all or nothing” mindset

Now, instead of ignoring a dirty sink because I don’t want to deep clean the whole bathroom…

I just clean the sink.

Final Thoughts

This routine isn’t about having a perfect home — it’s about having a manageable system that fits real life.

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by cleaning routines online, this is your reminder:

You don’t need to do everything.
You just need to do enough, consistently.
